Unfortunatelly it doesn't work.
Whenever I delete the content of field Gallery Thumbnail Height by saving it is set to 50.
The same happens with the Width.... if I delete it it is set to 50 by saving....
So, try to set in Item Detail Defaults/ Image Gallery Style/ Squares and Gallery Thumbnail Width set value as you want and Gallery Thumbnail Height enter value 0.
