TOPIC: meta description and keywords

meta description and keywords 14 years ago #11549

We have noticed the meta description and keywords keep populating in the JOOMSEF tables even though the rewrite is turned off for both. We do use the meta features for title and other functions though. We keep having to go through and removing all the data from the fields in JOOMSEF to keep them from populating the page meta descriptions even though this 'feature' is turned off. We write our own in the Joomla! article pages (which should by the way populate the JOOMSEF fields instead of attempting to overrule the page one.

Hello,
well it is possible they may keep populating, but they should not be generated in the page source with the settings as you have sent. Did you check that?
Also, did you clear cache after you have made the configuration change?

Yes, it's a behavior we have seen in the last version and this one as well. My client keeps telling when they get changed. I just noticed it again yesterday when checking the source code. I cleared the entries in the fields (I've had to do this before in the database on the old releases), clicked apply to make sure the changes held and then cleared the JOOMSEF cache and updated the URLs which brought back the original meta descriptions and keywords. I've had to do this a few times. It appears to me that if they populate they publish. It's great to have that option but not where it just populates itself. I think this is because we are using a mix of meta data and not having it on or off, all or nothing?
It's a great app. It has to do a lot of 'stuff' thanks

Hello,
according to my knowledge, the preference of using metadata is following:
1. metadata entered for article (if entered)
2. manually entered metadata in JoomSEF
3. JoomSEF automatically generated metada

Anyway, you could also check the setting is JoomSEF Configuration / Title and Metadatas.

I have this app on a few Joomla! installs however in this configuration it keeps overriding the page meta data with self populated 'noise'. I would suggest support look into this configuration. It's unfortunate because I may have to use another extension which does not do this. I've gone through and compared the meta data (on page) and its doing this. My client is particular about the meta descriptions.

*Edit: I'm going through these and it seems the ones that are being populated are blank in the article pages and the several ones I have looked at with article page data is not being re-written in the actual meta description (source view) :)

next edit: NO it's still doing it. Seems to add onto the ones that do exist with a no break tag. Very irritating.
Settings are as screen shot shows. If I shut off the meta tag re-write function the issue goes away. Then I lose the addition of the company name added to the end of the page title which the client wants for branding.

Yet another edit:
Also after the current update, 3.62 I'm getting bounced out of the meta area when I click 'apply' (like I clicked 'save') Also trying to sort has the same result. I end up in the control panel each time.

Hello,

As regards the metadata problem, go to Manage extensions page, click the Content extension, and on the Meta tags tab disable the "Generate description" and "Generate keywords" options.

As regards the bouncing out of the meta tags area, what browser do you use? Have you tried it in another one? There could also have been some problem during the upgrade. Try waiting for version 3.6.3 if the next upgrade fixes it, otherwise you will probably need to reinstall JoomSEF.
