I believe I have worked it out myself after much trial and error.
Its the setting for 'Exclude Source Info" believe it or not will determine if JoomSEF pays attention to or ignores all the menu item parameters.
Set to No means it will continue to obey layout set by menu item.

As for my query:

I on J1.5 and run JoomSEF paid version, and am quite sure JoomSEF is the problem by turning it on and off.
I appear to have an issue whereby if I create say a new menu item, type category blog and set the basic paras apart from default , say 1,20 2 20, as in leading, intro, columns and links, and any component parameters they are ignored completely. The same happens to menu items created long ago and if I try adjust those nothing happens. I tested various and something led me to JoomSEF and I did confirm that it appears to be JoomSEF causing this issue by disabling/enabling.
I know about settings in JoomSEF per content extension, but as I am not running any other content extension like K2 or any article extension, its just raw Joomla I cannot see how the settings appear to affect the menu items so dramatically.
Any ideas? or am I doing something wrong?

I wish to add on disabling and re enabling again, that on this occasion its interesting that JoomSEF appears to use the Joomla default paras for menu list, i.e 1,4,2,4. I can confirm the first 3 are for fact, I cannot confirm the link para, the fourth one. This still points at JoomSEF, somewhere somehow it is using default like paras or in other words ignoring my menu item settings.

I believe I found the source name, its the one generated from global config setup, and viewed in (Google) results when option to include sitename in page titles is selected in Tab - Title and Meta Tags .

Where can one edit the sitename, in other words where it is picked up from?
I have in config / title-and-meta-tags section have selected the option for SEF to append the sitename, after page title. So in search results one sees the page title and site name is appended. Thats good, it works fine. However it looks terrible, all in lower case bar first letter.
So I want to change it, but do not know where?

Can you advise?

I am still waiting on some clarification please?

In meantime, I found a select 'fix doc format' option in advanced config. I rather not use this as it does suggest it an cause other issues. However it appears not to have solved the problem either as pdf urls are still being generated.
so how can one stop the source of generating such, as you explained earlier, but could do so again with a little more detail as i dont quite understand it.
A lot of others appear to be viewing this topic, so I guess a lot of peole are expieriencing the same problem.

But its not all clear to me. Can you tell me how to clear the counters on 'hits'.
i would like a better or more accurate reading once i fix the pdf , call logged also, and other issues.
I know i can turn on some debug, as there is one section i recall picking up lots of hits from god knows where. I think its within SEF or similar. I will get more accurate info shortly this. In meantime how do i clear hits?

I have searched for quite a while and cannot find any other queries on similar problem.

My SEF appers to be generating SEF urls and adding /pdf
example is
old non-sef url:
index.php?option=com_content&catid=2&format=pdf&id=34&view=article

and the new sef url is
first-deposit-bonuses/888ladies-welcome-25-free/pdf

can you explain why or how to remove these as they appear to create one for almost every other url that is created and doubling my sef urls.
These actual url's are not correct either, its like they are an indirect url or link and when accessed they try open an article in pdf doc.

I run Joomla 1.5.22 stable and installed SEF 3.8.1 just a couple of weeks ago and have been reading the docs and trying to understand how it works. In one area however there is not a lot said, on HIts, and on RSS urls .
Can I ask, 1) how do i clear the 'Hit' counters. 2) it appears that i am getting 'ghostlike hits'
i say or describe it so, as I know my site is very new and I am not getting the traffic. This being said, I do not understand how/why certain urls' are generated or i mean I am not sure how to use them in full, like mysite.com/reviews/blog
Is it possible these urls are generated and are run by the software and generate hits in doing so?

Any advice or help appreciated.

I run Joomla 1.5.22 stable and installed SEF 3.8.1 about 2 weeks ago.
i appreciate a number of older entries cover this well hashed problem, but I am unsure where to go in my instance. I installed JoomSEF ArtIO (paid) a short while back and received those errors etc. In meantime I have had to create my .htaccess file and i believe all is working ok in that sense. Its present and chmod set to 644.
However i am unsure what to do next. If I select a number of indexed files and apply, nothing happens and then i click create xml and i get the same errors. One thing i did, was select edit .htaccess and it comes up saying it does not exist. This i guess is due to permissions set as 644, I believe not being writeable?
Do I need to change permissions to ??? and then create sitemap etc and then can reset the htaccess file permissions back to 644, as a security precaution, or does that file need to be written to all the time by JoomSEF?
Is this sufficient info or you need more ?
I have not included my 'id' as its viewable by all, or am i being paranoid unnecessarily, oops, sorry.
i can re append if you wish?
Any help appreciated.
