Is it possible with Joomsef by playing around with the URL links at the backend to adjust the pages where modules are shown? For example we have some modules appearing in all VM pages but we'd like to remove them in the cart page and also in some articles.

I'm not sure, but you could maybe change the Itemid stored with URLs. Itemid controls which menu item will be selected when the link is opened, so you can change it to different menu item and set the module not to be displayed for that menu item.
