Hi Rob,
thank you very much for this valuable data. On my sites (both joomla 1.0.11 and 1.0.12) I use joomsef v. 1.2.4 because it works great. No duplicate URLs either. I was very surprised to see duplicate URLs when I installed v.1.4.2. At first I thought this is Joomla v.1.0.12 problem but now it is obvious it isn't so. I really dont know what to do, Im stuck on version 1.2.4. Its ok at the moment, but what about the future...
Kind regards,
Zeljko

ok Pascal, it is possible that i applied only the first line.
Just one more question, does this rewrite rule have any negative impact on the speed of the site?
Kind regards,
Zeljko

Yes Pascal I remember now that I saw your shop in the signature, from a french forum that I used to Google translate to figure out what you guys have been discussing there :) Eventually I found this rule and applied it to my site ,and it work for content items, for example:

www.b r a c info.com/fr/povlja/appartements-povlja.htm

but for all the other, non content item urls the problem remained, for example:

www.b r a c info.com/fr/povlja/ (a valid category url)
www.b r a c info.com/fr/povlja/2.htm (duplicate url created by artio)
www.b r a c info.com/fr/povlja/3.htm (duplicate url created by artio)

those 2,3,etc.htm's were not stripped out for categories.
Hope this makes it a little clearer.
Kind regards,
Zeljko

So obviously I want www.b r a c info.com/fr/povlja/2.htm to be redirected to www.b r a c info.com/fr/povlja/

Hi Pascal, tahnk you for your post.

I think that this might work, I found on some other forums this as a solution. However, I have a sligh problem since my section/category look like

../section/
../section/category/

so I think this rewrite rule will not help me with those (since it deals only with .html urls).

Would you please be so kind and tell me the Rewrite syntax that would solve this problem of mine?

Kind regards,
Zeljko

Jiří,
thank you very much for your time. I agree completely with you regarding joomla and its seo 'friendliness'. It is a major drawback.

Could anything be done by redirect rules in .htaccess? To put a 301permanent redirect on content items with -1,-2,-3,etc.. suffixes??

Kind regards,
Zeljko

Hi scanreg.

It will limit it in the way that you will loose the control over modules on your site. You wont be able to have some modules published on some pages, and unpublished on others. Either a module is published and it appears on all pages, or it doesnt exist.
Maybe this will work for some users with simple sites, but serious webmasters wont be able to use Joomsef with Exclude source info (Itemid) set to YES.
Too bad, though.
Without this duplicate content issue, Joomsef would be dream-come-true SEF component.
We must help the guys from Artio to solve this.

Hi Jiří,

for example i have /content.htm stored in custom redirects
and SEF url /content-2.htm

I edit /content-2.htm change it to /content.htm and try to save it as custom redirect, but Joomsef says "URL already exists in the database".

Would it be possible to have two or more non sef urls represented by the same SEF url

Maybe this could be done by manually removing 1,2,3...etc in the jos_redirection table.....

Hi Trond, thank you for your post. Up until now it seemed I was the only one that raised this issue. I cant believe that people dont understand how SEO unfriendly duplicate content is.

Regarding joomla and duplicate content please visit forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,125365.0.html

I applied the patch mentioned in this post and was able to remove duplicate entries for an older Joomsef version (1.2.*), but with 1.3 and newer version it just doesnt work

Please, if you find a solution to this please let me know. Id really like to make it work because Joomsef is definitely the best SEF component for joomla out there, bu unfortunately unusable for serious SEOs at the moment.

Kind regards

Hi Jiří Veselý.

Thank you for your response.
I am aware that there are several options available to provide control over itemids in v1.4., but neither of them solves the duplicate url problem.

The option "Exclude source info" may be used to exclude the Itemid variable from the URL and thus eliminate the duplicates caused by it. However, ignoring it completely may lead to unwanted Joomla! functionality, like not swithing the templates as desired or so. Whether this will be a problem for you or not depends mainly on the way how your site is designed and how complicated it is. If you need to fix this, the Itemid should be "reappended" to the SEF URL as an extra part using the option "Reappend source". Then the resulting URL will look like yoursite.you/article.html&Itemid=xy.

But, "Reappend source" does not solve anything. After you turn it on you get the following urls for the SAME content item:
yoursite.you/article.html&Itemid=xy
yoursite.you/article.html&Itemid=xz
so, it generates duplicate content again.

I know that some people must think that I put too much importance on this duplicate content thing, but since JoomSEF is search engine friendly component, I think that this issue must be addressed. I cannot think of anything more SE unfriendly duplicate content all over your site.

Kind regards,
Zeljko

hi zitoon!

Thank you very much for your response. I have also found the post you are referring to, but I was a little suspicious about the impact that line in htaccess would have on my site's performance. Have you tried this on your site? Does it have any negative impact on your site speed?

Thanx again for your response!!

Kind regards,
Zeljko

Hi everyone!

We think that Artio JoomSEF is great component and we adore its support for Joomfish! However there is a HUGE issue for us and it is the generation of duplicate URLS, for example

content-item.htm
conten-item-2.htm

for the same content item, depending on the menu that was used to access the content item. I know there is an option to exclude the itemid in the SEF query but this messes up joomla functionality and the control of the modules.

We kindly ask anyone who has the solution for this problem to share it with us. This is a big problem from the view if SEs because it basically generates duplicate content all over our site.

Kind regards!
