I had the same problem and solved it.

The problem was, the Virtuemart category was not translated.
So you have to translate the Virtuemart category for a SEF URL in another language.

If the VM category is not translated, the SEF for the category page and all products in that category will not work.

I'm sorry you said that you have to translate the name of the category of virtuemart.
It's okay. But where you do it and with what.
I mean, you've done it with virtuemart, if you are in that menu item.
Or have you translated with Joomfish, if you, as you did.
