Please try disabling JoomSEF and check if it happens with Joomla core SEF too, or with JoomSEF only.
I also found this post when I searched for the errors you reported:
forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=106821.0
The answer mentions problems with some version of VM and Joomla on PHP 5.3. Try checking that.
