404 problem with redirect... 14 years, 10 months ago #7077

Hi!

I have 300+ links in google webmaster tool that can't be found on my site. They all generate a 404 page... This is due to the fact that I reorganized my site quite a bit. Now I have tried to fix the problem.
One of the missing links (according to google) is domainxx/index.php/Statistics.html. I have tried to create Custom redirects and 301 redirects for this and other links to index.php. I still get 404 on these pages. Why?? It doesn't seem like the redirects are working at all, even though clearing of cache, adding and reading...

It seems like SEF URLs can not start with index.php.... What can I do with the links not to have hundreds of unavailable links at google?

Any tips??

Thanks!
/Mikael

Hello,

you are absolutelly correct.
If the SEF link will start with index.php it will be probably not processed correctly by JoomSEF.
For such links, the easiest solution is to put the 301 redirects directly in the .htaccess file, redirecting them to the new SEF URL which does not include index.php.

Ok, thanks a lot for your reply Jan!

I tried redirect http://domain.se/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=17&Itemid=35 http://domain.se/ at the very bottom of my .htacess, but evidently not correct. How do I get the redirection right?

Thanks!
Mikael

Hello,

1. well, the link you have posted should be processed well by JoomSEF - check that parse Joomla SEO URLs option is on in JoomSEF
2. make sure the rule in .htaccess get validated (there may be other rule having effect before this one, so it does not get processed)
3. anyway, this redirection rule will IMHO not work correctly; if there is a query string in the URL, you need to use rewiting engine, mod_alias is not enough - check Apache docs for details

mod_alias is designed to handle simple URL manipulation tasks. For more complicated tasks such as manipulating the query string, use the tools provided by mod_rewrite.

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_alias.html
