Our EU VAT ID check has stopped working although we don't know from which date. We managed to install the plugin early Nov last year and I wonder if there has been any update that would mean the olders versions stopped working?

the problems are caused by the fact the online service URL has changed. (unfortunatelly without prior notice)

There is an updated version available at our site for download.
Or simply update the URL in:
administrator/components/com_virtuemart/classes/euvatcheck.class.php
from
ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/servi...checkVatService.wsdl
to
ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/checkVatService.wsdl
