error 500 - what is wrong here???

Well, thats an advance.

500 error means you have syntax error in .htaccess or that some of the used directives is not supported (.e.g because of your webserver configuration).

404 error means, the syntax is correct but something is still set incorrectly. This may be e.g. the Rewrite base path.
