Hello,

this depends mainly if you have set the component to manual or automatic mode.
In automatic mode, the invoice number should be assigned at the moment where order status change to defined status type. And at the same time, the invoice number is assigned.

Then the numbering is not dependent on clicking on icon in admin.

So I guess it is just matter of configuration in your case.
